The IndiAction project focused on the applicability of common user-involvement design methods in a social and cultural context unfamiliar to the design team. The context of the village hospitals, the first level of health care in the Udupi district of India. Within this project we carried out several methods for ethnographic fieldwork, including ‘Acting out’ and ‘Shadowing’ and user involvement events with paper-prototypes and ‘Wizard of Ozz’ mock-ups of a digital camera and a handheld computer. We acted out scenarios with the local nurses to test our understanding of their world and get their reactions on our design suggestions.
